Gentlemen & Ladies!
3 years of traveling has given me a lot. But something that I have received in abundance are ‘COMPLIMENTS’ and maybeeee I am over thinking, being a woman but tell me this: how is one supposed to look? why is one supposed to look a certain way? what happens if you look different?
As much as I love myself, I do feel the compliments I have received helped me in boost my ego. At the same time, it has made me feel insecure- so all these people are not going to stick around when I look old & ugly (well, thats how people perceive old age as).
Funnily enough, compliments like this impact a woman more than it does to any man. For generations, younger women have been sought after and considered more beautiful than older women.
Now imagine the scenario where two women are standing together probably of the same age and one gets the compliment while the other does not. How is one supposed to feel about oneself??
I think for the same reason, I started lying about my age and saying it much older than I actually am. I would often say I am 33 or 35, whatever comes out of my mouth first and stick with it. Its all fun but also comes from a deep-rooted insecurity.
People would be shocked to believe it but it made me feel much better than hearing “oh! you look good for your age”, when I said my real age.
I would rather have the disbelief & shock than hear a compliment because I don’t look a certain way they expect my age to look like.
Why does age has to define our looks? Or what career and life choices I make?
So, I am going to pin it down here- I am never going to give “oh you look good for your age” compliment to anyone. The person looks exactly how they are supposed to look and is doing exactly what they wish to be doing.
I am so happy writing this newsletter because I know for once that the few people it reaches out to, it will make the impact I envision. If you think, this makes sense at all, please do incorporate in your life as well.
We, as human, have endured so much and ageing should not be looked down upon. What would earth be without our elders who have guided us through so much 🥹🥺
Today, it’s going to be all serious talk I feel. Given that, I am writing this newsletter immediately after having my caffeine 🥵
I am not sure and can not speak for all- but it’s a shame that people do not think twice before speaking.
I recently met someone from India and the first thing the person spoke: “wow you are thinner than you look in your videos.”
Umm! Well okay. I take it. Thanks maybe??
The person continues to say “ thin is not the term, lets put it malnutritioned”
And I again wish I had the courage to say it out loud there but guess, I have not been raised to be rude or sound arrogant but imagine saying back “ yeah and you seem to have taken over all my food given your size 🤣🤣”
I would have not felt weird if this came out from someone who is not educated/literate enough but imagine hearing this from a couple who has traveled to multiple countries by now.
Do I need to teach you all on how body-shamming works?
Let me continue with my story here. I moved on and went to meet another friend. A local girl. We were walking by the beach and she said something similar.
So similar and yet the way she spoke made so much difference: “You have such a nice body. You would look so much better if you gained a little weight.”
That’s it! The END.
I understand sometimes we want to let our friends/family know how they can improve themselves and talking about weight is nothing wrong. But how you put it out makes all the difference.
Please choose your words kindly. It really can’t be undone.
Also Indian travel vloggers need to grow their mind and think outside making fucking content.
